SAN DIEGO ZOO - WILDLIFE EXPLORERS BASECAMP

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Explorer’s Basecamp, a transformation of the former Children's Exhibit into a cutting-edge facility, showcases diverse ecosystems including tropical, desert, and temperate zones alongside specialized exhibits for invertebrates, amphibians, and hummingbirds. The project, managed by PSSI, involved intricate structural concrete work beneath ornate finishes, featuring radiused walls with tight tolerances to accommodate the meandering design of the exhibit spaces. The construction was characterized by complex logistics, including maintaining access through the site for emergency vehicles and carefully managing the preservation of endangered trees, requiring innovative excavation techniques to protect their root systems.
